Ryan asked:

Anyone know how to remove headlights on a ‘97 ford contour? There is a long screw sticking up that i can’t get unscrewed and i’m using the right tool, and I don’t know how the headlights would come out either. My Headlights are yellow because they’re worn out, so instead of paying around $250 for new headlights i’d rather take them out and clean them myself. Any good suggestions on how to clean them? I’ve heard toothepaste or pam cooking spray?

It’s that time again. You need to fix those old headlights of yours and believe it or not, you can absolutely do this yourself without a professional at your side.

Of course, you have the option to have your mechanic look at your headlights and fix them up for you for a mere cost of hundreds of dollars, but why do that when you can change them yourself for a mere part of that cost? So make sure to follow these simple rules to fix and revamp your headlights to boost up the look and effectiveness of your car.

Most importantly you must find the main problem. They may not work as brightly as they should, maybe there is water in them, or perhaps they just merely failed inspection? If your headlights completely do not work, they most likely are either burned out or there may be some electrical issue to address. The bulb is the easiest to change since it just unscrews from the rear of the backlight lens.

Look at the bulb to see if it burned out and if it is, you can go to your local store such as Wal-Mart to purchase one for under $20. Put the new bulb in and make sure you don’t put your fingers on the glass part since this can cause the bulb to blow or wear even faster than it should. If the headlights still don’t work, you may need to see a mechanic due to a mechanical problem.

There may be water present within your headlights because of a hole, leak, or crack. The more modern plastic lenses can simply be just drilled in to let any water come out. Afterwards, just patch the hole with some silicone. Then you need to find the cause of the problem where water is coming through.

Any cracks or holes can be closed up with some silicone or clear sealant such as urethane. If the hole is really large, then it may be time to ultimately change and replace the entire lens.

Lastly, the other issue you may have is a cloudy, yellowish headlight which ultimately can lead to unsafe driving conditions with limited visibility. Today there are kits available at your local store to repair and clean your headlights.

In the past, you would need to change the entire headlight which could be costly but now there are ways to repair and revamp them for a fraction of the cost. So take the time to be safer on the road for yourselves and others by repairing and fixing those old headlights.

Basically, fixing and repairing your cars headlights is something everyone can do. You could take your car to your local car dealer and pay hundreds of dollars or you could repair them yourself for as little as $15. I would rather keep my money than make my local dealer rich with their outrageous markups and prices. Here is how to properly evaluate, fix and repair almost any automotive headlight problem.

First, determine what the problem is. Are they dim, not working at all, hard to see with at night, have water inside, failed inspection? If they don’t come on at all either you have a burned out bulb or an electrical problem. An electrical problem can be expensive and very labor intensive to fix – but they are usually vary rare. So lets first look at the bulb. The bulb unscrews out of the back of the headlight lens on most newer cars (on older cars with glass headlights the whole lens is the bulb and you just replace it with a new glass replacement $10 – $20 at Walmart). After removing the bulb, look at it. Does it look burned out? Is it black, melted, discolored? If so, replace with a new one. You can purchase replacements at your local automotive store or Walmart for under $20. Insert the new bulb or bulbs and make sure not to touch the glass part of the bulb with your fingers – the grease we emit on our fingers will cause the bulb to wear more quickly or even blow. After installing the bulb try the lights. 99% of the time this is the reason they will not turn on. If it still doesn’t light you have an electrical problem and this should be referred to your local mechanic.

If you have water in your lens this is caused by a leak, crack, or hole in the lens. With the newer plastic lenses you need to remove the lens and then carefully drill a small hole into the bottom of the lens (be careful not to hit the bulb. Let the water run out and then patch with silicone (easily obtained at Walmart or your local automotive store). Then find the source of the water. Usually the seals start to go bad after 3-5 years. You can cover the seal around the lens with silicone to reseal the lens. If the leak was caused by a crack a clear sealant like urethane can be used to seal the crack or small hole. If it is a large hole it would be best to replace the lens.

The other major problem is cloudy, yellow headlight lenses which can lead to diminished output, poor nighttime visibility and basically an unsafe car. There are now headlight repair, restorer and cleaner kits available to cure this problem. In the past you had to resort to replacing your lenses which can be very expensive – $200+ per lens not including installation and labor at your local car dealer. Now for under $20 you can fully restore your headlight lenses to like new optical clarity and greatly improve your nighttime safety. For more information on these kits please see the link below.

There you have it – the three biggest problems with automotive headlights and how to fix and repair them for greater safety for nighttime driving – and save big by doing it yourself. Please take the time to make your headlights and rest of your car as safe as possible. As having volunteered for a volunteer emergency squad for years I have personally witnessed dozens of fatal crashes that could have easily been avoided by just properly repairing and fixing the headlights. Be safe, drive safe – remember the life you save may be your own. Please pass this around so that it may benefit as many people as possible and increase the safety on our roads.

Cloudy, yellow headlights - we see them everywhere. All cars manufactured in the past 15 years have plastic headlights and they all start to corrode and cloud up due to exposure to the sun and environment. Cloudy, yellow headlights don’t just occur in old cars, they also occur on cars as recent as 2-3 years old. This corrosion and wear of the plastic headlight lenses is not only unsightly, but it is unsafe.

As stated by the AAA Foundation for Traffic Safety, “An average of 9 out of every 10 cars on the road today has dirty or yellowed headlights that greatly reduce vision and need to be replaced or professionally cleaned.” So what is one to do with these worn, yellow and cloudy headlight lenses? Up until recently, the only option was replacement and at an average of $250 - $400 per lens (not including installation and calibration (aiming)). For most people that was just too expensive to pay for their headlights.

There are aftermarket (non OEM) headlights available, but the savings is little and there are mixed reviews. It is a fact that quality, fit and durability of aftermarket headlight lenses is terrible (per Consumer Reports). Many of these aftermarket lenses were improperly sealed, didn’t wear well and had moisture leaks which greatly reduce night time visibility and safety. Some wouldn’t even fit without making modifications to the car. Being that the cost of most aftermarket lenses is very close to the cost of original equipment from the dealer (OEM) they were given a poor value and overall poor rating by Consumer Reports.

The recent advent of patented headlight cleaning and restoration kits has now brought an economical and affordable solution. Worn, yellow and cloudy headlights can now be restored to like new condition. Harsh UV damage from the sun and other environmental damage can now be reversed with these headlight cleaning and restoration kits. This is a repair that has not only been proven to be highly effective, but one that does not need to be done by a mechanic or body shop technician. These headlight cleaning kits can be used by the average consumer. This patented headlight cleaning and restoration kit is available for under $20 and is therefore much more cost effective than replacement and aftermarket lenses.

Being that clear plastic headlights are now standard on every automobile manufactured today and harsh conditions that cause them to prematurely wear are not going away, it is obvious that these headlight cleaning and restoration kits are sure to be helpful and save consumers money and increase night time driving safety at the same time. Car dealerships have been using the same headlight cleaning and restoration kits on their used car lots for the past 10 years and now you can too. Make your headlights shine and save big money at the same time.

When you buy a vehicle whether old or new you will have to maintain that vehicle so it will continue to run and look great. Some things will be simple to keep up with and will need to be done regularly, and others will be less frequently and maybe only if involved in an accident. Some people will put off getting auto body repairs to their vehicle because they don’t have the money or time. However this usually ends up costing you more in the long run! So make sure that you make smart repairs for your vehicle to keep it looking great for a long time to come!

There are many smart repairs you can make on your vehicle, check them out!

Paintless Dent Removal/Repair: If you have any dents or dings on your vehicle the best solution is to get a service known as paintless dent removal or PDR. This is a great system. The process does not involve any fillers, paint or other materials, therefore you will not be charged as much and it will not compromise the original finish on your vehicle. A skilled paintless dent removal specialist can make your vehicles dents and dings vanish quickly with the use of reflective sources, rods and special tools.

Windshield Repair: Many times while driving, especially behind a big truck, rocks and road debris fly up and hit our windshields. Most of the time there is no damage done, but occasionally your vehicle is left with a chip or crack in its windshield. This problem not only looks bad, but is extremely unsafe. If your windshield has a chip or crack in it, it is weakening and can burst at the littlest rock that hits it. Also the cracks spread and can impair your clear vision of the road ahead of you. If you get your windshield repaired quickly it will be quick and less expensive. If you wait it will be more time and money out of your wallet to pay for the replacement.

Bumper Repair: It may surprise you that 2/3 of car owners on the road today need bumper repair. Your vehicles front and rear bumper are there to help protect you, your passengers, and your vehicles engine. If it is in need of repair it is weak and will not be able to perform its job at an acceptable standard if an accident were to occur. Many people do realize that most bumper can be repaired, and for a fraction of the cost of bumper replacement.

Head Light Restoration: A whopping nine out of ten vehicles on the road today have hazy, cloudy, or discolored headlights. Those drivers have a 90% reduced visibility at night. That just can’t be safe for anyone the road. This occurs because of the oxidation that occurs on them. Our vehicles are subject to many different things like pollutant, sun, heat, and debris on the road. When those things mix with the oxygen around the headlights they oxidize and become hazy, cloudy or discolored. Any vehicles headlights can be restored at most auto reconditioning shops. The process does not take long and is affordable.

All of the mentioned repairs are smart repairs because they involve not only your safety but the safety of everyone on the road around you and the people who ride in your vehicle.
